Tell Me…Thursday : What is your favorite thing to shoot?

February 10th, 2011

A little bit about why I got into wedding photography…and proof that I’m a sucker for tear-jerkers! (ok, I have to warn you – *cheese alert*)

I got this question over a client meeting recently — landscape? macro? — so I thought I’d share it with everyone on today’s Tell Me…Thursday.

You see, I got into wedding photography – among all the different kinds of photography out there – because I have this love for capturing moments. Yes, yes, it sounds totally cheesy and lame. But HONESTLY, that is the ONLY thing that drove me to photographing weddings – and really, you have to have gone through YOUR OWN wedding, and be the bride or groom, in order to understand how important those moments are, and suddenly, the idea of “capturing moments” doesn’t sound so cheesy anymore.

I had been interested in photography for many years before I got into weddings. For years, I photographed casually, did alot of travel photography, lots of landscape, flowers, animals, etc and I was always reading photography books, and looking up photography resources on the web. So much so, I started taking university level courses. One of the things they made us do in art school was to find a niche – that field of photography that interests you, where you will specialize, and perhaps build a career around. I, never found my niche during my time in school.

But then, in 2007, I got married. Then I got my wedding photos. Then I cried. Not because it was bad, but because I saw people I loved in those photographs – people I didn’t even know I loved that much, until I saw them celebrating my wedding with me in those photographs. Those photos reminded me of how much I love and miss them, now that I’ve grown up and moved to the U.S to start a life of my own. My cousin, who read me bedtime stories and taught me English as a little girl; my favorite uncle who shared cookies and milk with me every night, my favorite aunt who took care of me since I was a baby, my mom, dad, brothers, whom I see only once every 1-2 years, all my best friends from high school who parted ways once we graduated. I miss them all. And I’m so grateful to have them in these photographs.

And from there, my journey down wedding photography started because I wanted to be able to to give the gift of beautiful and meaningful photography to others.

My favorite thing to shoot is a wedding ceremony and reception speeches – especially emotional ones (I’m such a sucker for tear-jerkers). I like photographing when no one is looking. I like catching moments/things/people that others may not notice. I like freezing a reaction during a speech. And with that, I end with some of my images of these moments. Enjoy!

Last Friday, I posted some images of mini albums that I recently delivered to my clients. Today, I’m showing you their big brothers. These wedding albums are so soft, so gorgeous, so classic and have such beautiful printing. Even I want one of these for my wedding photos. Or just spend all day touching the leather cover. Or hug them to sleep. Or..right.

There are a ton of wedding album options out there, but I choose KISS Wedding Books because of its simplicity, and timelessness. These will never go out of style – at least not the way I design them. There is no acrylic, or metal, or some other thingamajig on the cover. Just plain, high quality, top grain leather. p.s. They smell marvelous too!

One of the things Paul and I did during our honeymoon was make a journey through Italy. We landed in Rome, spent 2 days there, took the Trenitalia to Florence, spent 3 days there, then ended the trip in Venice (also took Trenitalia there; we had our entire journey planned out on their website, and bought tickets ahead of time.)

Florence is a pretty small town. Not much to venture, unless you go to the countryside, outside of Florence city center. The day we spent in downtown Florence was grey, stormy and rather cold. The good news about it though, is that I got to take some very dramatic landscapes of Florence!

We start with some images of the Italian countryside! These were all taken on our way from Rome to Florence. The view was GORGEOUS! Quite a departure from the US midwest view of cornfields, but I’m sure the Italians are so used to it, they probably find it boring!

There were lovebirds everywhere in Florence! Truly a honeymoon city. But I admit – it was a very romantic place!

Next morning – our first stop was Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Wet, rainy day. See all the umbrellas!

Then we climbed 414 steps up the up the Campanile, bell tower, that is part of the Cathedral. All the way to the top, and you’ll find this beautiful view of the city!

We spent the rest of the evening walking around the city, enjoying the dramatic stormy weather. It never really rained all day, just lots of storm clouds, which made it really cold. At the end of the day, right before sunset, the sun peeked out from under the storm clouds. It changed the whole landscape and made Florence glow in golden orange!

It amazes me how many e-session/weddings/photo sessions that I never manage to get up on the blog! Today is an e-session from WAY back in July (*sigh* when it was still short-sleeve-75-degree-warm-sunny July). Ryan was one of those guys who feels generally uneasy being photographed in public – and I don’t blame him – who in the world is used to 1) open public display of affection it the middle of nowhere, and 2) being followed around by paparazzi. But like most guys, he stuck with it, and played along as best he could. So, first of all, Ryan, if you’re reading this, THANK YOU(!!!!!) for dealing with my shenanigans!

This is one of my favorite pictures of the year. Just the way Melinda is looking at the camera, and Ryan is looking away. I promise – this wasn’t a set up by me at all – all I did was ask them to sit at a particular spot (because I noticed the sun light was really pretty right there) and started photographing from a far – they just got into this “pose” on their own!
